Celtic’s Failure To Qualify Will Affect Ability To Strengthen Squad

NEIL Lennon admitted Celtic’s failure to qualify for the Champions League for the second season running could adversely affect his ability to strengthen his squad further in the transfer market.

Lennon conceded the Scottish champions only had themselves to blame for their painful exit from Europe’s premier club competition after their 4-3 defeat at Parkhead to Romanian rivals CFR Cluj and 5-4 aggregate loss.

Celtic's exit was as painful as they come, but it was also entirely self-inflicted. Simply, catastrophic defending came back to haunt them on the biggest stage imaginable.

A Champions League exit is never easy but the pain of knowing you have gone out to a weaker team in Cluj was a tough one for fans to take and didn't it show on social media.

There were questions aplenty.

Not least: what was Callum McGregor doing at left-back, what was Scott Brown thinking and why couldn't Neil Lennon shut down the game?

@chris_sutton73: That’s the Tierney money gone tonight... the messing about in the last few windows has bitten Celtic on the backside... this day was always coming...

@Emrod_lives: That was the worst Celtic home performance in Europe I have seen since Molde. Worse in fact

@jamesvondoom: Brown with an act of sabotage. 3-3 goal was so soft. Elhamed was knackered. The whole defence switched off. Defensive unit? Non existent. **** me.

@90MinuteCynic: We appointed a blue chip manager 3 years ago and barely backed him on the market. Ajer, Ntcham and Eddy the only signings over the last 3 years that can impact on the pitch for us atm. A club being run on the whim of Peter ******* Lawwell. Infrastructure needs gutted

@BenTheTim: Elhamed Bolingoli Jullien Three first team players signed in the summer, and only one is deemed good enough to play in a big qualifier is Elhamed..
